A Brief History of SEMMO
SEMMO was founded in 1997 by a group of students with science, math, computer science, and pre-engineering backgrounds. They wanted to take as much of the prerequisite coursework at Del Mar College as possible prior to transferring to their respective college or university.
These students were also interested in learning as much as possible about their chosen majors and possible careers after college, so they began inviting guest speakers to their meetings to address these topics. These speakers have ranged from college admissions advisors to industry professionals to a Nobel Laureate.
SEMMO visits local industry and tours behind the scenes to explore occupations available in the working world. Some of the places that SEMMO has toured include:
- Johnson Space Center in Houston
- The Houston Zoo
- Sea World of Texas
- San Antonio Museum of History
- The San Antonio Zoo
- Texas A&M - Kingsville Engineering Department
SEMMO members are an active part of the Del Mar College community. We participate in the annual Fall Carnival, help with school mailouts, assist with the annual Math Awareness Day presentation, sponsor activities and events for National Engineering Week, and provide individual and group tutoring to fellow students.
SEMMO members can be found off-campus as well. Last year, SEMMO sponsored trips to Johnson Space Center Houston for the Texas Aerospace Scholars Program and attended the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) National Technical and Career Conference in Dallas, TX. We also assisted with the High School Engineering Day competition at Texas A&M University - Kingsville, and donated time and gifts to needy area children through the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program.
Members also benefit from the connections they make in SEMMO. Several of our students received scholarships last year, others participated in summer internships that allowed them to explore the fields that they are studying, and several others received achievement awards from Del Mar College or were publicly recognized by other organizations for their academic performance and/or community involvement/service.
