Read Your Work Aloud!

The smooth flow of syntax in word groups can become gummy, i.e. not smooth. A highly underused, yet highly effective revision tool is to read a draft aloud, as though before a group of people. In fact, tape record yourself and listen to the playback. Read slowly. Use appropriate pauses, phrasing, and emphasis. Let your ear detect what the eye sometimes does not. You can often 'hear' the smooth flow of syntax, or the bumps of wordy, digressive support levels. You will notice revision potential as a result! You'll 'hear' word omissions, erroneous forms, fragments, missing subjects, missing verbs, subject/verb agreement errors, prepositions without objects, etc.
